Alia Bhatt Acting Career

In 2014, Bhatt had her Bollywood breakthrough. The first release was Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Highway’, where she played Veera Tripathi, a teenager who’d developed Stockholm syndrome after being abducted. The second, ‘2 States’, was directed by Abhishek Varman. It was an adaptation of Bhagat’s novel, telling the story of two students who struggled to persuade their parents to approve of their relationship. Demonstrating her dedication, she learned the Tamil language in order to play her character, Ananya Swaminatham. Critics appreciated this and her performance in general – throughout her career, Bhatt has always been commended on her ability to snap into roles, growing into the character and making her performance highly credible.

The third film was the romantic comedy, ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’. This time, Bhatt played a Punjabi girl who had an affair with a stranger only days before her wedding. As Kavya Pratap Singh, many believed this was Bhatt’s strongest performance of all.

Bhatt has starred in many films since then, including ‘Kapoor & Sons’ and as the role of a migrant in poverty in ‘Udta Punjab’. The latter was especially intense for Bhatt, who’d previously played lighthearted roles. And so, she educated herself on drug abuse and learned to speak a Bihari dialect. Although praised for her performance, the film was criticized as some thought it presented Punjabi in a bad light.

Bhatt later played a cinematographer who visits a psychologist in ‘Dear Zindagi’, and her success continued in films such as ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ (2017) and ‘Raazi’ (2018).
